Passengers departing French airports will have to pay a ‘solidarity tax’ after new rules came into effect this weekend. An additional charge on the price of a flight, ranging from €1 to €40, came into operation yesterday, following pressure from French President Jacques Chirac to impose the tax to fund development aid in poorer countries. The airline industry has voiced their opposition to the plan, saying rising fuel prices are already adding to costs and that jobs may be at risk. The so-called ‘solidarity tax’ will see a charge of €1 added to economy priced flights leaving French airports and €10 to business-class tickets, for travel within the European Union.
